  1. The tissue between the upper and lower
  2. epidermis of a leaf blade (lamina),
  3. consisting of parenchyma-like cells
  4. containing numerous chloroplasts. In many
  5. plants mesophyll is divided into two distinct
  6. layers. The palisade mesophyll is usually
  7. just below the upper epidermis and is
  8. composed of regular layers of elongated
  9. cells. Lying below them is the spongy
  10. mesophyll, composed of loosely arranged cells
  11. of irregular shape. This layer contains fewer
  12. chloroplasts and has many intercellular
  13. spaces for the diffusion of gases (required
  14. for respiration and photosynthesis), linked
  15. to the outside by means of stomata.
